What Is the Spiritual Gift of Discernment?

Understanding and embracing our spiritual gifts is an integral part of our Christian journey. One such gift, often mentioned in the Bible, is the gift of discernment. What does it mean to possess the spiritual gift of discernment, and how can we apply it in our lives?

Discernment, in the spiritual context, is the ability to perceive and distinguish between different spirits, influences, or situations. It involves a heightened sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and an awareness of the spiritual realm. We are called to cultivate and exercise this gift for the edification of the body of Christ and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

To delve into the essence of the spiritual gift of discernment, let’s turn to the Scriptures for guidance:

Hebrews 5:14 (ESV): “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” This verse emphasizes the importance of maturity in Christ and the training of our discernment through consistent practice. The spiritual gift of discernment is not static; it grows as we engage in a continuous relationship with God and His Word.

1 Corinthians 12:10 (NIV): “to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.” In this list of spiritual gifts, Paul mentions the specific gift of “distinguishing between spirits.” This underscores the unique role of discernment in the spiritual gifts repertoire.

1 John 4:1 (NLT): “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” John’s exhortation emphasizes the need for discernment in evaluating spiritual influences. The discerning Christian is called to test the spirits and align themselves with those that are of God.

How can we practically apply the gift of discernment in our everyday lives?

  1. Prayer and Meditation: Regular communion with God through prayer and meditation on His Word enhances our discernment. The Holy Spirit speaks to us through these spiritual disciplines, guiding us in distinguishing between right and wrong.
  2. Knowledge of Scripture: A deep understanding of God’s Word provides a solid foundation for discernment. The Bible serves as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105), illuminating the way and helping us recognize the truth.
  3. Community and Accountability: Engaging with fellow believers and seeking wise counsel contribute to the refinement of our discernment. Proverbs 11:14 (NIV) states, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.”

The spiritual gift of discernment is a precious tool given to believers for navigating the complexities of life. As we cultivate this gift through prayer, knowledge of Scripture, and community, we position ourselves to be effective vessels in God’s hands. May we embrace discernment as a divine blessing, using it to glorify God, protect our spiritual well-being, and contribute to the flourishing of the body of Christ.
